(Oral Liquid Energy Supplement For Baby Pigs)

Pro-Cal is a blend of oils containing medium-chain triglycerides (MCT). Supplementation of newborn piglets with (MCT) has been shown to decrease nitrogen excretion and breakdown of liver glycogen. These observations indicate newborn piglets utilize (MCT) as an energy source rather than body reserves of glycogen and protein.

Medium-chain fatty acids from (MCT) are absorbed at a faster rate from the intestine and oxidized more rapidly by the liver than are long-chain fatty acids (found in animal fat and some vegetable oils). This may explain why Pro-Cal is a more effective energy source for newborn pigs than other products containing long-chain fatty acids." Dr. Gary L. Faltys

Pro-Cal oral liquid energy supplement is to be used on baby pigs as soon as possible after birth. Best response is achieved within 12 hours of birth. A second dose may be administered to weak, small, or scouring piglets within 24 to 48 hours. Pro-Cal is designed to be used as a management practice on all pigs to assure higher energy intake levels, or on small pigs displaying signs of malnutrition or stress.

HOW TO USE PRO-CAL

Administer 4 ml (using one stroke of the bottles pump which delivers 4 ml) to each newborn piglet orally. For a repeat dosage, administer 4 ml orally within 24-48 hours to weak, small, or scouring piglets. Caution--Be sure the material does not get into the lungs.

WHY MORE ENERGY FOR NEWBORN BABY PIGS?

High mortality and morbidity of neonatal pigs is a very serious problem to the swine industry today. Many researchers estimate over 50% of all swine mortality comes during the first few days of the baby pig’s life. For this reason, there is considerable interest in eliminating factors, which are responsible for poor neonatal performance. The solution is very complex as many factors are involved, including nutritional deficiencies, poor disease resistance, as well as maternal crushing. The majority of baby pig deaths occur during the suckling period or within the first few days of life. Many of these deaths are attributed to crushing, large litters, etc. However, this may be predisposed by the possibility of an energy deficiency in the pigs, leading to a weekend, unthrifty condition. To help remedy this problem, much emphasis has been placed on feeding fat to the sow in late gestation with the hope of improving the energy status of the newborn pigs. This approach, has met with some limited success. Recent efforts have focused on direct oral triglyceride supplementation to the neonatal immediately after birth.

Ongoing research at the University of Illinois and the University of Wisconsin has focused primarily on the use of medium chain triglycerides found in common fats and oils. The results have practical significance. There is an apparent improvement in the ability of the pigs to use medium chain triglycerides between six and eighteen hours of age, and the pigs may get acids of shorter chain length (6-7 carbon) than from longer chain length (8-10 carbon). Research work at Illinois has demonstrated that the emulsification of medium chain triglycerides further improves digestion and absorption, but, the dosage must be regulated avoid potential toxic effects.
